Kids Can Learn Chinese: 12 beginning lessons

100 frequently-used Chinese characters

Why I developed Kids Can Learn Chinese

My daughter learned around 400 Chinese characters in 6 months at age 4.  In 12 months, she already recognized 1000-1200 characters.  At age 5, she could read story books on her own with very little help.

I thought Chinese characters were too difficult for kids to learn so I did a lot of research on finding textbooks suitable for preschoolers before I started teaching her.  When my efforts were in vain, I decided to write my own material.  She loved learning Chinese characters and soon she had a basic vocabulary.  Therefore, there was a smoother transition when she moved on to Chinese primary school text books later on.

The content of Kids can Learn Chinese

This book includes 12 lessons.

The 12 lessons consist of 4 major stories. The characters, words, and phrases were built around the stories.  Through the repetition, a child can read an interesting story after 2 weeks.

A child can start working on individual characters and words by reading the word lists at the end of each lesson and listening to the audio supplement files downloaded, then read the lesson with the audio file.

If your child practices 30 minutes every day, he or she can probably finish one lesson each week.  In 3 months, you child will learn 100 frequently-used Chinese characters!

Who will benefit most from Kids Can Learn Chinese

3-6 is the best age group.  We all know that kids have super memory.  However, you will probably not realize it until you teach them Chinese characters.  You will be amazed how these little kids can memorize very complicated Chinese characters without knowing they are studying them.

When to start Kids can Learn Chinese

The sooner, the better.  According to my experience, very few adults, non-native speakers can master Chinese characters and the tones in Chinese language.
